Information if you want to transfer or exchange your home
What is a transfer?
A transfer is when a tenant requests to be moved to another social rented property, owned by the GHA or States Housing. It is not a house swap as the tenant will be asking to move into an empty property.
What is an exchange?
An exchange is when a tenant would like to swap properties with another States Housing or GHA tenant providing they meet all the conditions outlined in the Allocations and Eligibility Policy.
Other tenants can view exchange requests on the exchange list at Edward T Wheadon House or by request from GHA and, if they are interested, they can get in touch with the tenant to discuss making an exchange.
What do I need to do if I want to exchange my home?
You need to:
complete an exchange board form which can be obtained from States Housing that will go on display in reception at Edward T Wheadon House and GHA
check the exchange list for suitable properties
both tenants write to States Housing and GHA confirming the proposed exchange
await written approval from States Housing and the GHA to say the swap can go ahead
realise that you are accepting the property in its existing condition at the time of the approved exchange.
pay in advance an exchange fee of £250 to cover utility safety checks
What do States Housing and the GHA take into consideration?
We will consider transferring or exchanging you if:
you continue to be eligible for social housing
the property you want meets your need and vice versa
you haven’t breached your tenancy agreement during the previous twelve months
the condition of your current property passes an inspection. The inspection will tell us if you have looked after the property and if any significant work is needed.
your rent being up to date
You will be removed from the transfer list if you don't pay your rent on time or if you do anything that breaks your tenancy agreement.
We cannot guarantee when a property will become available. Your position on the waiting list will depend on your current situation and date of application.
